Nepal’s parliament on Sunday approved a controversial half-billion-dollar US aid grant, despite protests in the legislature and on the street.
After a short discussion, the government succeeded in convincing a sufficient number of lawmakers to accept the proposal.
Parliament Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota announced its support for the proposal by a majority of the members by voting.
Parliament approved the grant despite several days of clashes between protesters and police, where they shouted anti-government slogans, threw stones at police and pushed barbed wire and metal barriers that blocked the streets leading to Parliament.
Riot police responded to the demonstrators with tear gas, water cannon and batons.
Demonstrators said the terms of the grant agreement would override Nepal’s laws and threaten the country’s sovereignty, noting that part of Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategy with military components could bring American troops to Nepal.
US officials met with Nepali leaders and said the grant was only available in Nepal.in He said it was for the development of the country and the money was intended to be used to build power transmission lines and improve roads in the Himalayan country.
