Coinciding with Moscow’s decision to place Russia’s strategic deterrent forces on special alert in response to “Western aggression”, the White House said the United States and NATO did not threaten Russia.
A White House spokesman accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of “making non-existent threats to justify his attacks”.
“We need more sanctions against Russia and countries should declare their support for Ukraine instead of being neutral,” he said.
Earlier on Sunday, the President of Russia ordered the Ministry of Defense to put the Russian Strategic Deterrence Forces on special warfare alert.
The Russian President’s instruction came during a meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov.
Putin stressed that this step was in response to Western officials “not only taking aggressive economic steps, but also NATO officials making aggressive statements against Russia”.
