Following Liz Terrace’s resignation, her predecessor Boris Johnson is poised to make an unprecedented political comeback just six weeks after stepping down as UK prime minister, The Times reports.
The Times report said Johnson asked allies, donors and the team that helped him win the 2019 general election to run his new campaign.
The report indicated that Johnson’s return to the political arena would further split the Conservative Party, with at least 3 MPs poised to leave the party.
This comes after Mel Stride, Chairman of the Treasury Committee in the British House of Commons, announced his support for Rishi Sunak, who will lead the Conservative Party and the next British government after the resignation of Liz Terrace.
Stride tweeted that Rishi Sunak will tackle the economy, reunite the party and bring it back into political competition.
On Thursday, British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation after the shortest and most chaotic tenure as British Prime Minister.
Truss was forced to resign after his economic program damaged the country’s reputation for financial stability and made many people poorer.
The Conservative Party has an overwhelming majority in Parliament and does not need to call a general election two years ago, and the party will elect a new leader – Britain’s fifth prime minister in six years – by 28 October.
The race is expected to include former Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak and former Defense Secretary Penny Mordaunt, but the race could also see the return of Johnson, who was fired in July when his ministers resigned en masse to force him to step down.
