The French Foreign Ministry said yesterday that Paris had returned 15 women and 40 children who had been held in camps holding militants in northeastern Syria. She explained that the minors were transferred to the bodies of social protection of children and adults, to the “relevant judicial authorities.”
“The minors have been transferred to children’s institutions and will be under medical and social supervision,” the agency said in a statement. With regard to complaints, they have been referred to the relevant judicial authorities.
The women are among French women who voluntarily went to militant-controlled areas in Iraq and Syria and were arrested after ISIS was defeated in 2019. Many of these children were born in Syria.
The Foreign Ministry thanked “local authorities in northeastern (Kurdish) Syria for their cooperation, which made this operation possible.”
