On Sunday, police said two Rohingya leaders were stabbed to death by at least 10 people on Saturday at a refugee camp in southeast Bangladesh.
About a million Rohingyas live in more than thirty camps in the Cox’s Bazar district on the southeastern border of Bangladesh.
Violence has escalated here in recent months due to drug smuggling as well as political rivalry between Rohingya organizations. Police spokesman Farooq Ahmed said the two leaders were killed Saturday night at Camp 13 in Cox’s Bazar in southeastern Bangladesh.
He added that “More than ten perpetrators stabbed Mavlawi Muhammad Yunus (38), who is the leader of Camp 13. They also stabbed Muhammad Anwar (38), another leader. Younis died on the spot, and Anwar was taken to the hospital.
An official from the police camp’s security unit accused the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, an armed Rohingya group fighting against the Burmese army, of carrying out the killings.
