Indonesian President Joko Widodo has said his country will not be subject to FIFA sanctions because of the stampede that took place at a football stadium last week and killed more than 130 people.
Chaos gripped the Kanjuruhan Stadium after thousands of fans filled the pitch after Arima lost 2-3 to hosts Arima FC East Java’s Persibaya Surabaya earlier this month.
Police fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse the attackers on the field, who crushed dozens of spectators hurrying to the exit gate.
The disaster killed 133 people, including 37 children.
“Thank God FIFA will not punish Indonesian football,” Widodo said in a video Friday night, referring to a letter sent to him by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Widodo said his country’s government would work with FIFA to improve the management of football matches.
Indonesia will remain the host nation of the FIFA U-20 World Cup next year, which will feature 24 countries.
