Mexican protesters attempted to storm the Palace of Justice in Iguala de la Independencia, in the Mexican state of Guerrero, using a stolen truck.
Thousands of Mexicans marched out on Monday to demand justice on the eighth anniversary of the disappearance of 43 students in an incident described as a “state crime” involving the military and others in the country.
In Mexico City, protesters carried banners and chanted slogans calling for the fate of students to be investigated, the army to be investigated and those responsible to be punished. Monday’s rally looked mostly peaceful, with occasional clashes between protesters and police.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called on protesters to gather peacefully to honor the memory of the victims of the tragedy, which caused widespread outcry locally and internationally.
López Obrador’s call came after dozens of security forces were injured on Friday in clashes with protesters who threw rocks and improvised explosives at a Mexican military base. López Obrador also declared Monday a national day of mourning.
