While the Kremlin announced yesterday that the Russian president would not attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, the Russian embassy in London tweeted that President Vladimir Putin congratulated Britain’s new King Charles III on his accession to the throne.
“I sincerely congratulate you on your accession to the throne,” Putin said in a statement. “I wish Your Majesty success, good health and all the best,” he added.
On Thursday, Putin expressed his condolences to King Charles III of Great Britain on the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
In a statement, Putin said that Queen Elizabeth II “enjoyed the love and respect of her subjects, as well as power on the world stage,” adding: “The most important events in the modern history of the United Kingdom are closely associated with the name of Her Majesty.”
“I wish you courage and resilience in the face of this huge and irreparable loss,” the President of Russia, King Charles III, addressed, adding: “I ask you to convey the words of sincere sympathy and support to the members of the royal family and all the people of Great Britain.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
Peskov said that while “Russians respected her for her wisdom,” Putin’s presence at the Queen’s funeral “was not part of the plan.”
