Saudi Aramco, a global partner of the Formula One Championship, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Formula Motor Sport Limited to use sustainable low-carbon fuels in two championships starting in 2023.
The memorandum expresses the leadership of the FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3 championships in terms of development in this area, while continuing to work in this capacity in future FIA Formula 1 championships in single-seat racing cars.
This agreement, which is subject to approval by the FIA World Motorsports Council, will form part of a broader sustainability strategy announced by the FIA and Formula 1 to reduce the sport’s carbon emissions by 2030.
By 2026, all FIA championships will be required by regulations to use 100% sustainable fuel in their cars. Among the most outstanding achievements to be made along the way is the use of 100% green fuel starting from the 2026 Formula 1 season, in addition to the use of next-generation hybrid powertrains.
