Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the former Soviet Union, died today at the age of 92.
The Gorbachev era saw major changes in the politics of the former Soviet Union; Gorbachev accepted the principle of restructuring the structure of the Soviet economy, known as “perestroika”, but his reform program failed miserably.
It is noteworthy that perestroika is a policy initiated by glasnost, that is, transparency. Some believe that this policy led to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990.
