Fighting has resumed in northern Ethiopia, in the border regions of Tigray, where rebels in the region and the government are trading accusations of violating a truce declared five months ago.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an “immediate” ceasefire in Ethiopia and expressed shock at the resumption of violence, while the chairman of the African Union Commission, for his part, expressed “deep concern” at the resumption of hostilities. In a statement, Musa Faki Mahamat called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged both sides to resume negotiations in search of a peaceful solution to the conflict, which has been ongoing since November 2020. The United States also called on the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (PLLF) rebels to negotiate a cessation of hostilities, announcing a five-month truce. She saved countless lives.
On Wednesday morning, the Tigray rebels first accused the Ethiopian army of a “large-scale attack” on their positions, and the Ethiopian government, in turn, accused them of “violating” the truce.
