Yesterday, the Taliban opened fire in the air in Kabul to disperse a demonstration organized by women demanding the right to work and education, almost a year after the Islamist movement came to power in Afghanistan.
About forty women chanted “bread, work and freedom” in front of the Ministry of Education before a group of Taliban militants dispersed them with shots in the air about five minutes after the demonstration began.
Demonstrators held up a banner reading “August 15 is a black day” on the anniversary of the movement’s control of power in the country last year as part of their demand for their rights to work and participate in politics.
Taliban fighters in military uniform blocked the intersection in front of the demonstrators and fired into the air for several seconds.
The movement believed that unless women had an urgent reason to go out, “they had better stay at home”.
