The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced today, Tuesday, that against the background of Russian recognition of the independence of the republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, the Ukrainian charge d’affaires in Moscow, Vasily Pokotilo, was summoned for consultations.
The diplomat was summoned because the Russian leadership made “illegal decisions” to recognize the independence of “two entities established on temporarily occupied Ukrainian territory”, the ministry said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said he would examine the possibility of breaking diplomatic relations between Kiev and Moscow once Moscow recognizes the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow is open to diplomatic contacts with Kiev and does not want to break diplomatic relations with it, and the Russian Foreign Ministry later confirmed Moscow’s commitment to this stance.
