Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations urged Russia to cancel the decision to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics and return to the negotiating table to resolve the conflict in Donbass.
“We demand that Russia cancel its decision to recognize Donetsk and Luhansk and the need to return to the negotiating table, and we condemn the deployment of additional Russian occupation forces on Ukrainian territory,” said the Permanent Representative of Ukraine. United Nations, Sergey Kislitsa.
The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Tuesday morning to discuss the situation in Ukraine, against the background of Russia’s recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk republics from Ukraine.
On Monday evening, Russian President signed two decrees requiring Russia to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics from Ukraine, amid the ongoing military-political crisis in the Donbass region since 2014.
The President of Russia has instructed his country’s armed forces to ensure peace in the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, where Moscow recognizes its independence and has signed two mutual cooperation agreements.
