Wildfires raging on France’s Atlantic coast continue to spread today, raging across large areas south of Bordeaux as a European heatwave put communities from Greece to the UK on high alert, Landeras, located southeast of Bordeaux, as well as Test du Buch, located on the coast directly southwest of Bordeaux.
Another 3,500 people were evacuated and more than 16,000 people were forced to leave their homes after fires broke out last Tuesday, a local official said.
Hot weather persisted in the region, with temperatures in the Gironde province expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius, and a red alert was issued for the province and 14 other regions in western France.
Meanwhile, authorities said the wildfires on the Greek island of Crete, which broke out on Friday and forced several villages to evacuate, were under control but not yet extinguished.
And in Britain, extreme heat warnings went into effect and it was decided to keep the red alert for Monday and Tuesday, when temperatures could reach 40 degrees Celsius or more.
Temperatures in parts of Germany are also expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
