The US administration is funding tools to bypass censorship in Russia, which have become essential for many citizens and activists in this country not to be isolated from the world. Since the invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, Moscow has ramped up its propaganda and severely restricted its citizens’ access to unofficial news sources, i.e., media that talk about a “war” in Ukraine rather than a “special operation” aimed, according to the Kremlin, at “denazification” in a country, a neighboring country. The Psiphon virtual private network, which allows you to bypass censorship, recorded about 48,000 Internet connections per day in Russia at the beginning of the year. Internet connections increased twenty-fold in mid-March, coinciding with a government ban on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Today, the network claims to average over 1.45 million daily users.
