Finnish President Sauli Niinisto warned of “imminent threats” to world security due to the lack of agreements between Russia and the West.
“I think we’re in a more dangerous situation today than the traditional Cold War, because at least then there were certain agreements between the United States and the Soviet Union on arms control and so on,” Niinisto said. In an interview broadcast on CNN on Sunday.
The Finnish president stressed why his country does not currently see why to consider joining NATO, but acknowledged that this issue has sparked controversy in his country amid tensions in Ukraine. “There’s a lot of discussion about this,” Niinisto said, “but at least for now, I don’t see any reason to make any sudden and drastic changes. It’s a decision that should be pondered over.”
