Liverpool have reached an agreement with Portuguese side Benfica to sign Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez for 75 million euros (about $79 million), Benfica said in a statement on Monday.
Benfica said the value of the deal could eventually rise to €100m, topping the record Liverpool paid Southampton (around $90m) to include Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk in 2018.
Nunes, who will celebrate his 23rd birthday on June 26, joined Benfica in the summer of 2020 from then-Second Division Spanish Almeria for 24 million euros in the most expensive deal in Lisbon pole history.
