Egypt lost 2-0 to Ethiopia in the second round of Group D of the African Cup of Nations qualifiers to be held next year in Côte d’Ivoire.
Egypt fell to last place in the group on goal difference, level with Ethiopia, Malawi and Guinea, with 3 points each from two matches.
The match was the second for Egyptian coach Ihab Galal, but the Pharaohs did not reach their usual level, which gave them the title of African nations, and the opportunity to play a play-off match for qualification to the World Cup.
Ethiopia moved forward with a goal in the 21st minute thanks to Dawa Hotesa to capitalize on their superiority over the Egyptian team in the game and the result.
In the 40th minute, Shimeles Bekele added a second goal in favor of the Ethiopian team, further complicating the situation for the team of Ihab Galal.
The assistant referee canceled a goal against the Ethiopian team, and the post provided another attempt by the same team to save the Egyptian team from a heavy defeat.
Egypt only tried to play against Ethiopia in the final minutes, the first being Omar Kamal Abdel Wahed who threw close to the post in the 88th minute and the second being Ibrahim Adel moments after being saved by the goalkeeper.
