Egypt midfielder Mohamed Elneni has signed a new contract with Arsenal, fifth in the English Premier League, the North London club announced on Wednesday.
Elneni has scored five goals and provided 10 assists in 147 games for Arsenal in various competitions since joining from Basel in 2016.
Arsenal have not disclosed the length of the 29-year-old’s new contract, whose previous contract expired at the end of June, while English newspapers reported that the center player’s contract would be extended by one year with an option to renew.
“Mo is a really important part of the team. He brings endless energy, enthusiasm and dedication to the team and is loved by everyone,” his Spanish coach Mikel Arteta told the club’s website.
“He’s an important player for us on and off the pitch, a real role model for our young players and I’m happy to have him.”
For his part, Elneny said: “I love this club and feel like part of this family.”
“I want to continue with this great club and I am very happy and very excited about the future,” he added.
Elneni made 14 Premier League appearances this season, which saw Arsenal finish fifth, and also helped advance his country to the Africa Cup of Nations final in Cameroon, where it lost to Senegal on penalties.
Elneni won the FA Cup with Arsenal in his first season in 2017 with him and spent the 2019-20 season on loan at Turkish club Besiktas.
