New images have surfaced following renewed fighting in recent days around the strategic Black Sea Serpent (Snake) Island, which is generally in the shadow of Russian control in the form of Ukrainian control, amid expectations that it will escalate into a battle for control of the western coast of the Black Sea.
On Thursday evening, Ukraine announced that it had damaged a Russian Navy logistics ship near an important small island.
“Thanks to the actions of our sailors, the support ship Vsevolod Bobrov, one of the newest ships of the Russian fleet, caught fire,” said Sergey Prachuk, a representative of the Odessa Regional Military Administration.
Satellite imagery released by US private company Maxar showed the aftermath of what it says was a possible missile attack on the Russian amphibious assault ship Sirna near an island close to the maritime border between Ukraine and Romania.
The photographs also show damage to some of the buildings on the island.
