Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, head of the Burkina Faso junta, was sworn in less than a month after rebel troops seized the West African country in a coup.
The opening ceremony, which is not open to the public, was held at the Constitutional Court on Wednesday.
Addressing the nation on state television after the inauguration ceremony, Damiba praised “the security forces and the people of the country, which he says have been facing threats posed by extremism for more than six years”.
“I swear before the people of Burkina Faso and on my dignity that I will protect, respect and defend the constitution, fundamental laws and laws and do everything in my power to ensure justice for all the people of Burkina Faso,” he added.
“Our country has always been strong during storms, so these difficult times should be an opportunity for us to reach better horizons,” he added.
Damiba seized power and pledged to maintain security in the war-torn country, and since taking power, Damiba, who has met with representatives of the security forces, civil society, diplomats and politicians, did not specify a timetable for the transition to the elections. The international community said “it should be done as soon as possible”.
