Rescue teams are still working in Turkey today, Wednesday, in an attempt to find survivors despite fading hopes. Perhaps a miracle will happen and one of them will be left to cling to life, resist and survive the “catastrophe of the century” as described by the Turkish president. About 212 hours after the devastating earthquake, Turkish rescuers pulled a 77-year-old woman alive from the rubble in Adiyaman, Turkey. According to the official Anatolia news agency, rescuers continue to search for survivors under the rubble. She added that the brigades managed to rescue citizen Fatima Gungor after 212 hours of waiting under the rubble, and the elderly woman was immediately taken to the hospital. A number of Gungur’s relatives hugged the rescuers in gratitude for her rescue.
A few hours earlier, after 209 hours, steam was extracted from the rubble.
At dawn on February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria, followed by hundreds of strong tremors that caused huge loss of life and property in both countries.
The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria has reached more than 39,000 and the number of injured has approached 100,000, according to official statistics, in addition to the forced displacement of thousands of families.
And Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority announced on Tuesday evening that the death toll from the earthquake in the country’s south had risen to 35,418. An AFAD statement indicated that about 196,000 earthquake-affected people were evacuated from the affected states.
At the same time, the death toll in Syria rose to 3,688 dead and 14,749 injured in a devastating earthquake.
