Women account for 85% of total spousal violence victims in 2021 (143 deaths, including 122 women and 21 men) compared to 82% in 2020, a constant since 2006.
As in previous years, women were the main victims, with 102 of them killed in 2020 compared to 146 femicides in 2019. The study confirms that “the most common characteristics of criminals remain the same.
They are mostly men, often married, French, aged 30 to 49 or 70 and older, not engaged in professional activities.
Almost one in three women (32%) have experienced violence in the past, and 64% of them reported it to law enforcement.
Of these, 84% filed a complaint. In a third of cases (33%), at least one substance was observed that could change the ability of the offender and/or the victim (alcohol, drugs, psychotropic substances) to distinguish at the time of the events.
The vast majority (78%) of incidents occurred in the home of the spouse, the victim or perpetrator.
